Sex education: does it really ‘offend Indian values’?

Priya Kath, from India, is a youth representative attending the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (PMNCH) Partners Forum in Johannesburg, here she tells us why her government is wrong to oppose comprehensive sexuality education and why now’s the time for young people to speak out. More on the Youth Outcome Document can be found here  http://www.who.int/pmnch/about/governance/partnersforum/youth/en/ There are 358 million young people in India today- that’s almost a third of the nation’s population. India’s development depends on its commitment to and investment in its young people, but when our Health Minister makes statements like “Sex education should be banned in schools” - it can make me despair. He also argues that sex education corrupts the youth and offends “Indian values”. He and many of his colleagues in government say that it may lead to promiscuity, experimentation and irresponsible sexual behavior. This is not the first time sex educatio...

What Would be The Ideal Age of Love and Marriage

There isn’t any perfect age to get married because everyone’s life is different. Some people become millionaires at 25, while some don’t even complete their college till 27. You can’t really define a border-line for everyone to get married in that limit. It really depends from person to person. The perfect age should be - when you’ve gained physical and mental maturity to handle a marriage, a life-partner and when you have fair-level of financial stability to run a household. I’m not saying you should be a millionaire, but at least earn ‘more’ than you spend. That should be enough in the beginning.

How do Indian parents teach their children about sex?

15 days after my first menstruation . Mom confirms that my younger sister has fallen asleep. Then continues like this: Now you are a big girl. Do not change dress in front of anyone. Don't allow any man cuddle you too much. Do not let any boy touch your private parts. And do not sleep with any male person other than dad. Also tell me if someone touches you in bad places. Me: Why are you telling me all these? Mom: Now you are capable of being pregnant. Me: Cool. How does that happen? Mom (hesitating ):  They put their thing inside your thing. Me: What thing. Mom: That thing you saw in the visual dictionary. Penis. We slept. That was in 6th standard. Later she taught me the whole thing in the biology chapters in 10th and 12th. Well… That was how a mother who is a zoology college teacher taught her child. :P Taken from https://www.quora.com/ They don’t . Such conversations almost never happen in an Indian household. Children generally get to kn...

Politician too discourage this topic because they consider it against indian tradition. During adolescence a child's body go through many changes and hence they are confused about these changes and hence seek for answers.
